Socialist societies aim to raise the standard of living and ensure the equitable distribution of income. Improving productive efficiency is a key way to achieve this. National output can be increased either by adding new productive capacities or by improving the utilization of existing capacities. The latter is considered the better approach as it increases output and reduces costs without requiring large investments. This involves enhancing the skills of the workers and providing training instead of investing in new projects. Despite frequent discussions on improving productivity, there is a lack of clear definitions and proper metrics for measuring it.
