Adam Smith stated that the division of labor is limited by the extent of the market. J.B. Say proposed that "production creates its own demand," and John Stuart Mill expanded on this idea, suggesting that production creates its own demand if properly distributed. Allan Young, in his paper "Increasing Returns and Economic Progress," argued that economic progress depends on the mutual relationship between the division of labor and the extent of the market. Young believed that adopting more capitalistic methods of production and greater labor specialization would foster growth.
