The purpose of the index is to deflate the nominal wages of agricultural laborers to reflect real wages in terms of purchasing power. The price index used is based on the commodities consumed by these laborers, and it is calculated using a formula that incorporates the prices and quantities of these commodities over the specified years. The formula is designed to capture the weighted expenditure on different commodities and adjust for changes in their prices. Data for this study comes from family surveys, as well as commodity statistics from 1958-59, which help in determining the percentage of household expenditure on various goods in rural areas.
