The fifth session of the Scientific Follow-up Activity at the National Planning Institute, held on February 3, 2026, presented an analytical review of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2025 report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The session focused on addressing high food price inflation and its implications for food security and nutrition. It reviewed global developments in food markets in light of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and geopolitical disruptions in the Black Sea and Red Sea regions, and the resulting supply and demand shocks, sharp increases in food and fertilizer prices, and the impact on low- and middle-income countries dependent on imports. The session also discussed the role of fiscal, monetary, and trade policies in confronting food inflation, emphasizing the importance of targeted fiscal interventions, flexible social protection systems, and coordinated macroeconomic policies to ensure economic stability and support vulnerable groups. In addition, it highlighted the effects of climate change, water scarcity, and the degradation of agricultural land on the sustainability of agricultural production in Egypt, underscoring the need to expand climate-smart agriculture, improve irrigation systems, enhance water-use efficiency, and localize food industries and production inputs to reduce reliance on imports. The session further stressed the importance of raising awareness of healthy dietary patterns and reducing excessive dependence on wheat and bread as a primary source of energy, given the associated economic and health implications. It also addressed the role of social protection and food subsidy programs in mitigating the effects of inflation, while emphasizing the need to improve targeting mechanisms and adjust the value of transfers. Moreover, the session underscored the importance of strengthening market information systems, investing in research and development, infrastructure, and supply chains, and enhancing oversight of food quality and safety through stronger institutional coordination among relevant entities, particularly the Ministries of Agriculture and Health, in order to build more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems capable of withstanding future shocks and achieving food and nutrition security. |
