The eighth session of the Tuesday Seminar issued by the National Institute of Planning examined the impact of geopolitical tensions on Egypt from the perspective of comprehensive national security. It explained that the international system is experiencing a period of conflict and a reshaping of global power balances, marked by a transition from U.S. unipolarity toward a more multipolar order with the rising influence of Russia and China, alongside the continuation of the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and growing divisions within the Western alliance. The seminar also emphasized the continued strategic importance of the Middle East to the United States due to oil and gas resources, relations with Gulf countries, and strategic support for Israel, while highlighting the crisis of the Arab regional system and its declining cohesion caused by the absence of a unified Arab vision regarding sources of threat, divisions over Israel and Iran, and the persistence of the Arab-Israeli conflict alongside the escalation of direct Iranian-Israeli confrontation amid the Gaza war. The seminar further explained that Egypt faces a highly complex regional environment due to multiple security threats related to developments in Libya, Gaza, Sudan, the Red Sea, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, creating intertwined security and economic challenges, particularly through rising energy prices and disruptions to international trade. In response, Egypt has adopted a strategy based on strengthening military capabilities, carefully balancing relations with major and regional powers, cautiously improving ties with Turkey and Iran, and maintaining a policy of “strategic balance” by diversifying partnerships with the United States, Russia, China, and Europe without fully aligning with any single power. The seminar concluded that strengthening Egypt’s national security requires achieving strong economic growth to reduce dependence on external actors, building flexible alliances, and enhancing political and diplomatic maneuverability in an increasingly unstable regional and international environment, while emphasizing that the economy, science, technology, and public awareness are fundamental pillars of the state’s ability to confront future challenges. |
