Economic theory suggests that as real per capita income rises, the composition of national output and relative prices remain stable, but historical data shows significant changes in these areas during economic development. The paper first examines the structural shifts in Turkey’s economy, comparing them to expected patterns of economic change, highlighting differences in demand and supply elasticities across sectors like food and manufactured goods. It emphasizes that the growth of different sectors is not uniform, but rather follows certain patterns due to varying elasticities. In the second part, the study explores external and specific factors that influenced the pattern of change in Turkey's major sectors, noting that state-led investments and exogenous factors played a significant role in shaping the economy’s structural development.
