| Resumo: | Bent Hansen’s study investigates savings in the UAR (Egypt) during the periods 1938/39 and 1945/46 through 1962/63, with a particular emphasis on the economic and social dimensions shaping saving behavior. The study develops a methodological framework for defining and measuring both public and private savings, while analyzing the dynamic relationship between public revenues and savings levels.
Employing quantitative estimates of government revenues and savings, combined with an in-depth analysis of economic and social indicators, the study assesses the influence of political shifts, economic transformations, and the impact of the world wars on savings patterns during this critical historical phase. The findings reveal that governmental policies, alongside major economic changes and the repercussions of the global wars, played a decisive role in shaping both public and private saving trajectories.
The study provides valuable insights into the respective roles of the state and the private sector in fostering savings as a strategic instrument for promoting economic growth and development. It underscores that the effectiveness of savings in advancing developmental objectives hinges upon the integration of public economic policies with market mechanisms, thereby enhancing the economy’s resilience to long-term financial and structural challenges |
