This session of the Young Researchers Seminar addressed the topic of the evolving roles of think tanks and their interaction with a changing world. It reviewed the emergence of think tanks and the growing global attention they have received as a vital link between government, the private sector, universities, and civil society, highlighting their role in producing evidence-based knowledge, guiding policymakers and public opinion, and anticipating future trends. The episode clarified the concept of think tanks and their various classifications according to levels of independence, funding sources, and institutional affiliation, and distinguished them from research centers in terms of objectives, focus, and target audiences. It also discussed the concept of a changing world, characterized by rapid and unpredictable transformations, and the resulting challenges that require continuous learning, the ability to distinguish useful information from noise, and flexible decision-making within shrinking timeframes. Furthermore, the episode traced the evolution of think tanks’ roles from a traditional focus on theoretical research and indirect policy influence to more interactive and participatory roles, including linking research with practice, facilitating societal dialogue, using modern communication tools, offering innovative multidisciplinary solutions, and building the capacities of future generations of decision-makers.
